C:\Windows\Temp
C:\Windows\Temp does not seem to get cleaned out in running the disk cleanup tool from the Properties menu of my C: drive. Is this by design? Can these files be safely deleted? They are occupying a significant fraction of my C: (SSD) drive and I'd like to get rid of them if it is safe (15/128 GB). Ron

Hi, Perhaps, there still have some running applications or services use these files so that you can not delete them. Do not worry about that. If you really want to delete them, you may boot from Safe Mode to implement the action. Thanks for understanding. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Juke, Thank you. I know I can delete the files manually, and thank you for confirming that it will be safe to do so. But I find it hard to believe that the Windows "Disk Cleanup" tool is seeing all 15 GB of files as being in use! It's behaving as if it is not seeing any of them. Is this a shortcoming of the design? Or is there something else going on here? -- RonRon

I have noted that when posting in some of these groups, it is common to receive answers to question I've not asked, or suggestions which don't answer my questions, but rather respond to someone's interpretation of what I might be doing. Probably I don't ask the questions with sufficient clarity. I'm really interested in the answers to the specific questions (at least I thought they were pretty specific) that I originally posted. To restate and perhaps clarify: 1. Is my observation that the Windows Disk Cleanup tool (the one that is accessible from the properties dialog when you select a disc drive) excludes C:\Windows\Temp valid and by design? If my observation is not valid, what might be wrong with my setup? Juke Chou thought it might be that files were in use, but I find it hard to imagine that 15GB of files could be in use. And if they were, Windows would not allow me to delete these files manually (which I could). 2. Are these files safe to delete? Ron

Hi, Please refer to the following. Disk Cleanup Tool May Not Delete Temporary Files This behavior occurs if the temporary files are less than seven days old. The Disk Cleanup tool does not delete temporary files that are less than seven days old. To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods: Wait until the files have not been modified for seven days, and then run the Disk Cleanup tool again. Drag the contents of the %WinDir%\Temp folder to the Recycle Bin. Right-click the Recycle Bin, and then click Empty Recycle Bin to delete the files. NOTE: This method is not recommended because the files may be in use or they may be called upon by a program, which could result in error messages if the files are deleted. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I find it hard to imagine that 15GB of files could be in use. Ok, no one else will ask. I can't take the suspense anymore. What is in there that's consuming 15GB ?

When I open the article, at the top it states: "This article applies to a different version of Windows than the one you are using. Content in this article may not be relevant to you." The Disk Cleanup tool does not seem to delete ANY of the files in my %WinDir%\Temp folder. And most of them are a lot older than 7 days. I confirmed this by doing a file count (using the command line: Dir %WinDir%\Temp) Can you verify that the Disk Cleanup tool in **Windows 7** is designed to delete files in c:\windows\temp? Ron

Ron, Just a bit of moral support really. I found this thread after a search, as I am experiencing the same issue. I'm using Vista, and have a mere 6GB of files in Windows\Temp. They are definitely not in use and some are over two years old. They are prime candidates for being cleaned. I thought maybe the disk cleanup utililty was being thrown by the fact that my virus scanner had accessed the files recently, but none of the dates (last accessed, modified etc.) are less than a week ago. There definitely seems to be something wrong with the disk cleanup utility and I'd also like to know what's happening. OK, we all know how to delete files manually, but why have a dog and bark yourself? Phil

It is interesting that, although many have made suggestions as to alternatives to the disk cleanup tool; none have really answered the question posed as to whether this tool, in Windows 7, is even designed to delete files from c:\windows\temp and how to troubleshoot it if it is not working as designed. Hi! Found this while trying to automate the deletion of the contents from the %windir%\temp folder with onboard tools. I'm trying to accomplish it with a scheduled task of the cleanup agent on a Windows Server 2003 SBS w/ SP2. Apparently it doesn't include the temp folder. Since your initial posting is more than half a year old I don't expect to revive this thread, but wanted to add my disappointment that despite asking the clear question whether this directory is included or not you never got an answer from within Microsoft. I will script it then... Salve! Oaito.

I will script it then... Salve! Oaito. It did seem to me that I asked a fairly straightforward question as to whether this function was included in the design of the Windows Disk Cleanup tool, and how to troubleshoot it if it wasn't working, even when files were old and not in use. No one was able to answer that seemingly simple question, but rather provided answers to questions I did NOT ask, but that the respondents thought I might be curious about <sigh> Perhaps your posting will engender some relevant response.Ron
